London 2012 signs ground-breaking agreement with the Playfair 2012 Campaign to protect workers’ rights

In response to the evidence of exploitation of workers producing goods for London 2012, detailed in the new report Toying with Workers’ Rights (Play Fair, 2012), the organisers of the London Games have signed a ground-breaking agreement with the Playfair 2012 campaign to protect the rights of workers in its supply chains.

This follows the ground-breaking agreement signed between the TUC/Playfair 2012 campaign and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

The Playfair 2012 campaign recognises that LOCOG is the first Games organiser to take this step towards transparency and we welcome the progress that the organisers and some companies have now made in this respect. Companies listed are: Adidas (disclosed July 2011); Golden Bear Toys; Haymarket Publishing; Honav; Hornby Hobbies Ltd; Innovative Sports Limited; Merrythought; Samlerhuset; The Royal Mail; The Royal Mint; and WWRD. We hope that more London 2012 licensees/suppliers will follow suit and agree to be more open about where their goods are made and the conditions in which they are produced.

Maltesers to go Fair Trade in 2012

Mars is the latest chocolate manufacturer to source one of its products from Fair Trade source.

Maltesers is the UK’s third largest confectionery brand (after Cadbury Dairy Milk and Galaxy) so this is a major commitment by the company, and one which will deliver over $1 million in Fairtrade premiums each year to the small farmer cooperatives involved in West Africa. We can also confirm that the sugar and the vanilla in Maltesers will also be Fairtrade certified in line with our normal composite product policy.

Bristol Fair Trade Business Awards 2012

This years awards ceremony to be held on Friday 9th March 2012 at Leigh Court, Bristol hosted by the BBC’s George Alagiah

The Bristol Fairtrade Business Awards, sponsored by The Co-Operative, are the first of their kind. The awards ceremony will be held at Leigh Court, Bristol on Friday 9th March 12-2pm and hosted by George Alagiah.

Every business that meets the criteria for the Bronze, Silver or Gold Award will receive a Fairtrade Business certificate, as well as an e-logo to use for their business, and the opportunity to progress to the next level. These will be awarded at the Fairtrade Business Awards ceremony on 9th March, along with the overall winners for each category.
By entering the Awards and gaining a bronze, silver, or gold award you will demonstrate your company’s commitment to fair and ethical business

FairTrade Fortnight 2012

Just a reminder but Fair Trade Fortnight will be occuring between 27th Feb and 11th March with the “Take a step” campaign.
